Credit For Prior Learning

Portfolio Assessment

Deadline to Submit Applications: September 30, 2024

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is a program designed for students who may have academic experience outside of the college institution. The student petitioning would like to apply that experience to their academic degree in the form of credit, if deemed applicable.

A student who petitions for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) through Portfolio Assessment is requesting to be awarded credit for college level learning acquired through professional training, work and life experiences, or other non-collegiate opportunities for learning. Students eligible to receive CPL credit be matriculated at York College or a CUNY institution to be awarded the credit. Credits for demonstrated knowledge earned through the CPL process do not fulfill the college’s residency requirements. CPL must apply towards degree requirements and once recorded at York College, are transferable to another CUNY institution on the same basis as if the credits have been earned through regular study at York.

**Please be aware, receiving CPL Credit may or may not have an impact on your Financial Aid.**

Each academic department within York College will assign a course title, number, and credit amount (as stated in the bulletin) to the CPL Protfolio Assessment Program. The student will receive the neutral grade of CR (credit) when awarded awarded the credit for the course, and wil appear on their transcript as such. Conventional letter grades shall not be used.

This petitioning process and policy is set to engage faculty and administrators in the clarification of credit equivalencies as they relate to the specific curriculum set by York College, as well as the student’s selected program of study, while ensuring transparency and equity for students.
