York College Library Rules
Purpose: York College Library is an academic library serving a diverse population of students and faculty. The following guidelines and rules were developed to maintain an appropriate academic atmosphere for the Library to fulfill its mission to York College.
York College Library is committed to providing quality collections, outstanding services, and excellent user education to students, faculty, staff, and the community to support the College’s mission. The Library manages and provides seamless access to both print and online scholarly information; offers reference service, research consultations, circulation service, interlibrary loan service, and information literacy instruction. The Library provides modern facilities and equipment and advocates for students to maintain a pleasant physical space for learning and scholarly activities.
Library patrons can expect that the Library will protect their privacy and rights to research and education in a facility that supports learning in both group and individual settings.
Rules: The following rules have been established to provide a peaceful environment for students and faculty to study and do research; and to prevent activities which could cause damage to the Library, its equipment, or its collections.
- Food, or displaying open food is prohibited. Consume all food outside of the Library. Closed drink containers (i.e., water bottles, travel mugs, beverages with straw and lids) are permitted in the Library. Please keep beverages away from Library computers.
- Do not engage in disorderly or disruptive conduct, including making excessive noise. Please keep conversation at a low level. Group study must not disturb other Library users. Headphones are required for any audio.
- Talking on a cell phone in the Library is prohibited. Please set phones to vibrate or silent. If you need to make or take a phone call, you must first exit the Library.
- Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver. The supervision, safety, and security of children are the responsibility of the adult guardian.
- All Library users are expected to adhere to the City University of New York’s Campus Behavior Code: Henderson Rules.
Failure to abide by the York College Library rules may result in college-imposed discipline in accordance with the CUNY Rules and Regulations for the Maintenance of Public Order Pursuant to Article 129-A of the Educational Law, and applicable procedures pursuant to CUNY Bylaws.
Public Safety will be notified in instances where a person’s behavior might jeopardize the safety of any Library faculty, staff, or users, or for continued noncompliance with York College Library rules. Where appropriate, the matter may be referred to law enforcement.
