Private Loans

Borrowing money to pay your tuition and other educational costs.

We understand that student loans are often a burden for recent college graduates, however, borrowing money to pay for tuition and other educational costs may be the key to realizing your educational goals.

Alternative Student Loan

Before applying for an alternative student /private education loan, we strongly recommend that you exhaust all of your federal loan eligibility (subsidized and unsubsidized loans).

York College does not provide a preferred lender list to students. You have the right to choose to borrow your loan from any lender who participates in the program under which you are eligible to borrow. However, assistance can be found at CUNY's Private Education Loan Programs webpage.

Things to Consider:

  • Repayment options/Interest rate options
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements / Enrollment terms
  • Loan restrictions (current & past due balances)
  • Rate reductions & graduation rewards

In order for your alternative loan request to be certified by York College and processed by your lender, you must be registered with at least the minimum required credits per your lender for the semester.

Your loan period may only cover one academic school year including Summer, Fall, and Spring.

  • 2025 Spring: 01/25/2025 to 05/22/2025

Processing Time Frame

Alternative Loan requests will take approximately two (2) to four (4) weeks for certification to be completed. Please keep in mind that the amount certified by the school may not exceed your cost of attendance (COA).
COA is the amount it will cost a student to go to school for a semester or for an academic year. The COA is the estimate of: tuition and fees, the cost o food and housing, the cost of books, supplies and equipment, transportation expenses, loan fees, travel, federal student loan fees, miscellaneous expenses and more.
