Winter Aid
Winter intersession credits count toward a student’s spring enrollment total, but the charges for winter courses are billed separately from spring tuition.
Students must either pay out of pocket for winter intersession courses or have enough excess spring financial aid to cover both their winter and spring balances. In some cases, adding winter courses may increase a student’s Pell Grant and/or make them eligible for a federal loan, since federal financial aid is based on the total number of credits a student is enrolled in. These forms of financial aid may result in a refund after spring tuition and other charges are paid, which students can then use toward the cost of their winter intersession classes.
There are many benefits to registering for winter intersession courses:
- Students can earn three or more credits in just three weeks.
- It allows busy students to get ahead and reduce their fall and/or spring course load by taking fewer credits during those semesters.
- Students can focus more time on demanding courses or take popular classes that often fill quickly during the regular fall and spring terms.
- It provides an opportunity for students to catch up on credits needed for graduation and stay on track for scholarship programs, including the New York State Excelsior Scholarship, which requires students to complete 30 credits per year.
