Human Research Protection Program (HRPP)

All CUNY colleges including York College have an HRPP office.

The HRPP Coordinator at York College is Professor Deborah Majerovitz. Email her at dmajerovitz@york.cuny.edu with any questions or concerns related to the IRB process or research involving human subjects.

The IRB Process

Everyone involved in research with human subjects, in any capacity, must take the online CITI course. Follow the instructions at https://www.cuny.edu/research/research-compliance/training-education/citi-training/. For your institutional affiliation, choose City University of New York.

To apply for IRB approval, you will need an account in the IDEATE program.  https://ideate.cuny.edu/home/. IDEATE only works in the Firefox browser.

It is important to remember that when using Human Subjects they are treated in an ethical manner. Therefore, under this program, ORSP allows your research to use Human subjects under Federal Guidelines. It is our duty to project both the Human Subject involved in the research and the researchers involved, so please be sure to review all necessary materials that involve human subjects.

This office is here to assist faculty, staff, and students with applying relevant federal regulations and CUNY policies to research protocols involving data collected from human subjects. Here are some general questions you may have when dealing with human subjects:

What Are the Rules and Regulations in Using Human Subjects?

For more information regarding why you might want to use a human subject, the procedure in using human subjects, and who should be involved when using a human subject please visit the Regulations to Protect Volunteers in Research web page.

What Do You Do When an Incident Happens?

It is best to avoid any accident or negative event when dealing with human subjects, but we are aware that incidents happen. In the event an incident occurs with a human subject, it must be reported immediately. Contact your campus HRPP coordinator dmajerovitz@york.cuny.edu immediately to discuss the event and to determine whether it must be reported. For more information, please visit Guidance on Reporting Incidents to OHRPR.

ORSP would like to make your research experience as serene as possibly. In order for this to happen, we need you to do you part, and allow ORSP to do its part in assisting you in the process. If you are experiencing any difficulties or are in need of any assistance, please feel free to contact us, or for more specific assistance please contact OHRP.
