Budget Preparation

Budget proposal can be the guidelines to achieve the goals of your projects. Always ask yourself what needs to be accomplished in order to reach the goals of your project when you are preparing your budget.

  • Is a research assistant necessary for this project?
  • If a research assistant is necessary, how often should he or she work a week?
  • Does minimum wage affect the pay rate of a research assistant?
  • What materials will I need to complete my research successfully?
  • Will the equipment I have efficiently, and effectively help produce results accurately?
  • Will I have any long-term cost or orders to make for my research?
  • Will I be traveling for this research?
  • Will I need to attend a conference?
  • Will I be able to travel under the grant I have applied for?
  • What other cost may be present with this project?
  • Will I need a website?
  • Will a Consultant be necessary for this research project?
  • Do I need a subcontractor?
  • Will I have to take a leave of absence from work?
  • Does this project allow credit hours, if so how many?
  • Will I receive a paycheck in the summer months?
  • Are there any budget restraints within the budget guidelines? 
  • Are there any indirect cost for this project?
  • If there are any indirect cost what policy should I follow to assure I will be able to receive funding?

If you are unsure how to answer some of the questions above, please do not hesitate to come into ORSP to help you prepare a budget outline for you research project. If you are to come in, please come in an appropriate timeframe to ensure that all deadlines are met. Once you have decided to apply to a grant, your budget outline should be one of the first things you complete for your proposal. After identifying your objectives and meeting with your grant officer, your grants budget should be conspicuous.
