Turnitin LTI FAQs

This is a frequently asked questions (FAQs) for students to learn how to use the Turnitin LTI.

Very important:

You need to have a valid CUNY email in Blackboard in order to submit your paper to Turnitin. To find out if you have a CUNY email in Blackboard, check out this tutorial: Setting up your Blackboard.
Do not include special characters in the filename of your paper. It can cause that your professor is not able to see your paper.
Use a desktop or laptop computer, do not use a phone, to submit assignments. Turnitin does not support phones with which successful submissions cannot be guaranteed.

How to submit a Turnitin Paper Assignment?

Before you proceed, we advise checking that the file you'd like to submit will be accepted. View all accepted file types and sizes on the Turnitin website.

Go to the course page where your professor posted the assignment. On that page, click the assignment link. You will be brought to the Assignment Dashboard. Click the question mark next to the assignment name to view the assignment information.

The assignment details are displayed. Pay attention to the Due Date, Feedback Release Date, and additional settings. All the dates are in 24-hour format instead of AM and PM. 16:00 EDT means 4 PM in Eastern Daylight Time during the summer daylight saving period.

There are 3 ways to submit a Turnitin Paper.

Depending on where your paper is located, please click the appropriate tutorial link listed below:

Submitting a paper - File upload - from your computer
Submitting a paper - Text upload
Submitting a paper - Cloud upload - from your Cloud storage

Once you successfully submitted your paper, you will need to download your Digital Receipt. Turnitin will not send an email notification of your digital receipt. See the section below for how to access the Digital Receipt.

If you do not see your Digital Receipt, it means that you did not submit the assignment successfully. Please submit it again and make sure that you receive a receipt.

How to access the Turnitin Digital Receipt

We recommend downloading the Turnitin Digital Receipt for your records.

When you successfully submit a paper in the Turnitin Assignment, a green bar indicates that your submission is uploaded successfully. Click on the "Download Digital Receipt" link to download and save the receipt.

If you forgot to download the receipt after submission, you can click on your Turnitin assignment in Blackboard and then click on the receipt icon on the far right.

If you do not see your digital receipt, it means that you did not submit the assignment successfully. Please submit it again and make sure that you receive a receipt.

How to view the Turnitin similarity report for my paper?

You can view the Turnitin similarity report only when your professor sets the Turnitin assignment to allow students to view it.

Go to your Turnitin assignment by clicking the assignment link in your Blackboard course.
Then click on the Percentage link under "Similarity" to open the Feedback Studio.
The “Feedback Studio” pop-up screen will open. As you can see in the screenshot below, the toolbar on the right is divided into three sections. The blue section on the top is linked to the feedback from your professor. The red section in the middle is linked to the similarity report. The purple section on the bottom is linked to grammar, spelling, style and mechanics of English.

How to view my professor's feedback to my paper submitted to Turnitin?

Go to your Turnitin assignment by clicking the assignment link in your Blackboard course.
Click on either the number under Gade or the percentage number under "Similarity" to open Feedback Studio.
The “Feedback Studio” pop-up screen will open. On the right vertical toolbar, the blue section on the top (see the screenshot below) is linked to the feedback from your professor.
If you only want to see the feedback from your professor, make sure that the hamburger icon on the blue section is blue. If it is black, click on it to make it blue. At the same time, make sure the hamburgers in the red and purple sections are black so that the similarity text and grammar corrections are not highlighted to avoid confusion about your professor's feedback. If one of them or both are not black, click on each of them to turn it to black.
On the left panel, if there is any blue call-out icon or a rectangle with the blue background, click on it to see the inline comment. On the right panel, if your professor uses Blackboard rubric tool, you can click “View Rubric” to see your scores based on the rubric. If your professor leaves a voice feedback, click the triangle play button to listen to the audio feedback. If your professor leaves a summary feedback, you can see it under "Text Comment."
