Internship Guide and Directory

Career Services, Division of Student Development
Career services internship guide overview

An internship is an on-the-job training work experience that allows students to test out future career possibilities, and participate in pre-professional work that may be related to their career interests. Some interns find permanent, paid employment with the companies in which they interned.

Internships may be paid, unpaid, partially paid (in the form of a stipend), part-time/full-time or for school credit. Typically they are part-time during the university year and full-time in the summer. They usually last 6 - 12 weeks, but can be shorter or longer, depending on the company involved. The act of job shadowing may also constitute interning.

Positions are available from businesses, government departments, non-profit groups and organizations which allow you to network with professionals in your field, thus gaining career advice.

Career Services strongly encourages all students, particularly those with little or no work experience, to take at least two internships prior to graduation.
