Description of programs and courses in the Accounting and Finance Department
Accounting and Finance Program Description
The Department of Accounting and Finance empowers students to become ethical, analytical, and career-ready professionals in today’s fast-changing business world. Our programs combine theory with hands-on experience to prepare graduates for success in accounting, finance, and related fields from public accounting firms and financial institutions to corporations, nonprofits, and government agencies.
Our faculty bring a wealth of professional expertise and academic excellence to the classroom, providing personalized guidance and mentorship every step of the way. Students develop not only technical proficiency but also the critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills that employers and professional organizations value most.
We offer a range of programs designed to meet diverse professional goals:
Majors
B.S. in Accounting and Finance (150-credit licensure qualifying registered program): This New York State registered program satisfies all educational requirements for CPA licensure in New York effective August 1, 2027. With an integrated 150-credit curriculum, students gain a strong foundation in both accounting and finance, preparing them for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination and for leadership roles in financial management, auditing, taxation, and investment analysis. To ensure academic excellence, students must earn a grade of C or better in each required accounting course. In addition, no accounting course may be taken more than three times by a student in this major.
B.B.A. in Accounting:
The BBA in Accounting program offers both flexibility and focus, allowing students to shape their academic journey through three specialized concentrations:
- Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination
- Advanced Accounting
- Management Accounting
Each concentration is designed to align with students’ unique interests and career goals. The Advanced Accounting concentration, in particular, is structured to help students meet New York State’s 120-credit “CPA 120-to-sit” rule, qualifying them to take the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination. (Please note that New York State requires 150 total credits to waive one additional year of experience for CPA licensure.)
This program provides a strong foundation in accounting principles, business strategy, and data-driven decision-making, preparing graduates for diverse career paths in public and private accounting, auditing, consulting, and beyond. Students also develop the analytical and leadership skills necessary for success in graduate or law school.
Finance Program:
The finance curriculum gives students a deep understanding of financial markets, investment strategies, risk management, and corporate finance. Through practical coursework and analytical training, students develop the tools to make sound financial decisions and drive value in any organization. Graduates are well-prepared for exciting and dynamic careers in banking, investments, financial analysis, financial planning, and related fields. To offer greater flexibility and accessibility, many finance courses are available in online formats, allowing students to balance their studies with work and personal commitments while advancing toward their professional goals.
B.S. in Accounting (Original Program):
The Bachelor of Science in Accounting is the original accounting program, designed to provide a solid foundation in accounting principles, business practices, finance, and data analytics. In response to the evolving business environment and the updated New York State CPA education requirements, the Department of Accounting and Finance has developed two new programs descriped above, the 150-credit B.S. in Accounting and Finance and the B.B.A. in Accounting, to better prepare students for professional success and CPA licensure.
Students currently enrolled in the original B.S. in Accounting program must complete all degree requirements and graduate by September 1, 2027. After this date, students who have not yet graduated will need to transition into either the 150-credit B.S. in Accounting and Finance program or the B.B.A. in Accounting program to continue pursuing their accounting studies.
