Core Facilities

The Chemistry Department houses several instruments for research and educational purposes. The list of instruments includes a NMR spectrometer, electronic and vibrational spectrophotometeres, a X-ray diffractometer, a differential scanning calorimeter, a peptide synthesizer, HPLC systems, an atomic force microscope, a scanning electron microscope, a dynamic light scattering particle analyzer, disintegration and dissolution testers, tablet hardness and friability testers, a tap density tester, a spin coater, and a plasma cleaner among others.

The instruments are open to all faculty, graduate and undergraduate students from York College and other local institutions. New users should contact the designated people listed below to use the instruments in the department.

This is a tabletop solid-phase peptide synthesizer with production scale capacity (up to 200 mmol of peptide) using a single reactor with a capacity of up to 35 g of resin.

Biologics SFM-20 Stopped-Flow Module

The SFM-20 is a basic 2-syringe instrument with a 2 mm light path cuvette (dead time of ~10 ms). This instrument enables the kinetic studies of rapid reactions in solution.

Bruker Nanoscope 8 Atomic Force Microscope

The Nanoscope 8 enables visualization of sample surfaces using contact, tapping or peak force mode. Different sample holders are available for experiments in air and fluids. A heater-cooler scanner provides sample heating and temperature control from -35 °C to 250 °C in air or inert gases. The heater-cooler fluid cell kit provides temperature control from about 4°C to 50 °C in water.

Cryomech LNP40 Liquid Nitrogen Plant

The LNP40 is a modular system capable of producing liquid nitrogen with 98% purity at a rate of 1.7 liter/hour (> 40liter/day). The system is composed by an air-cooled CP2850 helium compressor, a Scales Industrial Technologies air compressor with a flow rate of 178 ALPM at 12.1 bar FAD (free air delivery), and a Dewar assembly with max capacity of 160 liters.

Fisher Scientific Isotemp Model 650-14 programmable muffle furnace

The Isotemp Model 650-14 programmable muffle furnace can go from room temperature to within 5° of 1125°C in 25 minutes. The chamber volume is 0.14 ft3. It has all necessary accessories, including a nickel crucible. The system microprocessor permits the user to customize a heating program of up to 24 ramp and soak steps. A soak period of up to 24 hours may be interspersed between any two successive ramps.

Jasco Inc. NRS-3100 Dispersive Confocal micro Raman Microscope

The Jasco NRS-3100 is equipped with 420 nm and 785 nm lasers, and an aberration-corrected polychromator with CCD detector. The sample stage can be controlled with a joystick, and the samples can be visualized by optical microscopy at 5-X, 20-X, 50-X and 100-X magnifications.

Harrick Plasma PDC-32G Plasma Cleaner

The PDC-32G plasma cleaner is a compact, tabletop unit with adjustable RF power (low, medium, and high power settings), a hinged door, and a metering valve to control gas flow and chamber pressure. The instrument is suitable for surface cleaning, surface activation, and modification of surface chemistry.

Horiba LabRAM HHR Evolution Raman/UV Microscope

The LabRAM HR evolution RAMAN microscope is suited for both micro and macro measurements, and offer advanced confocal imaging capabilities in 2D and 3D. The instrument is equipped with an Olympus B41 microscope, and 244 nm, 488 nm, and 785 nm lasers that enable UV RAMAN analysis of the samples at high spatial and spectral resolutions.

Horiba Fluoromax-4 Spectrofluorometer

The Horiba FluoroMax-4 spectrometer is a powerful tool for measuring fluorescence of solids, liquids, powders and thin films. The sample is illuminated by a 150 W xenon, continuous output, ozone-free lamp. The excitation monochrometer has an optical range of 220 – 600 nm blazed at 330 nm. The emission monochromator has an optical range of 290 – 850 nm blazed at 500 nm. The FluoroMax 4 has two detectors. One is a calibrated photodiode reference detector to correct for intensity and temporal fluctuations in the source during excitation scans. The other detector is an R928P red-sensitive PMT used in photon counting mode with signal linearity up to 2 x 106 CPS.

Horiba Jobin Yvon Fluorolog Modular Spectrofluorimeter

This spectrofluorimeter contains a 450 W Xe CW lamp for high intensity, borad spectrum excitation and a pulsed Xe flash lamp for phosphorescence measurements. This instrument is configured to do time resolved fluorescence measurements to study dynamics of proteins and other compounds. This instrument has a lifetime range of less than 150 ps to 1 s.

Jasco J-810 CD Spectropolarimeter

This CD polarimeter has a wavelength range from 163 to 900 nm with a 150 W Xe arc lamp. This CD instrument is also equipped with stirring and Peltier accesories that can be used to study temperature dependent secondary structure changes in proteins and polypeptides.

Jasco V-570 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer

The V-650 is a double-beam spectrophotometer with a photomultiplier tube detector. The high sensitivity of the photomultiplier tube detector enables accurate measurements of low concentration samples. The light source consists of a Halogen lamp (330 nm to 2500 nm), and the bandwidth can be set as low as 0.5 nm. The system is equipped with a single monochromator, and the low stray light slit settings provide excellent linearity of up to 3 absorbance units.

The V-650 is a double-beam spectrophotometer with a photomultiplier tube detector. The high sensitivity of the photomultiplier tube detector enables accurate measurements of low concentration samples. The light source consists of a Deuterium lamp (190 nm. to 350 nm) and a Halogen lamp (330 nm to 900 nm). The advanced optical design results in high optical throughput and allows the bandwidth to be set as low as 0.1 nm for high resolution work such as gas and vapor phase spectroscopy. Low stray light slit settings provide excellent linearity of up to 4 absorbance units.

Jasco V-670 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer

The V-670 double-beam spectrophotometer utilizes a single monochromator design covering a wavelength range from 190 to 2500 nm. The monochromator features dual gratings (automatically exchanged): 1200 grooves/mm for the UV/VIS region; 300 grooves/mm for the NIR region. A PMT detector is provided for the UV/VIS region and a Peltier-cooled PbS detector is employed for the NIR region. Both gratings and detector are automatically exchanged within the user selectable 750 to 900 nm range.

Laurell Spin Coater

The WS-650Mz-23NPPB spin coater can reach up to 12000 RPM with a maximum acceleration of 13000 RPM/sec with a standard chuck. Wafers up to 150 mm diameter or 125 mm square substrates can be mounted in the 241 mm I.D. bowl-shaped chamber. The digital processor enables easy configuration of up to twenty 51-step programs.

LeCroy 9350 500 MHz digital oscilloscope

LeCroy 9350 500 MHz digital oscilloscope

This 4-channel oscilloscope collects a billion 8-bit voltage measurements every second, giving a time resolution of 1 ns. The record length is 8 million points. There is a wide variety of trigger options. It is fully programmable via GPIB.

MARS 6 Microwave Reactor

MARS 6 Microwave Reactor

This microwave reactor is capable of delivering 1800 watts of energy for rapid heating of reactions. This instrument is primarily used in the organic synthesis laboratory for the synthesis of difficult peptides. Under optimum conditions, peptide synthesis time is reduced by more than 75% compared to manual peptide synthesis. This instrument is also equipped with a fiber-optic temperature control for accurate temperature measurements.

Perkin-Elmer VICTOR3 V Multilabel Reader

This instrument is equipped with multi reading modes capable of doing fluorescence (top and bottom measurements), luminescence. UV-Vis, and fluorescence polarization measurements with temperature control. This instrument has a tungsten-halogen lamp and a PMT detector. This instrument also has a shaker function with adjustable shaking mode, duration, speed and amplitude. This instrument can also be configured to accomodate different types of microplates as well as Petri dishes and slides.

Rigaku Miniflex II Benchtop X-ray Powder Diffractometer

The Rigaku Miniflex II can be used for a variety of applications from diffraction pattern comparison of polycrystalline materials such as powder samples and metal plates to qualitative and quantitative analysis and quality management of raw materials and products. The X-ray generator operates at 30kV and 15 mA, and the goniometer has a scanning range between -3° and +145° and a scanning speed that spans the 0.01-100°/minute range.

Shimadzu's double beam AA-6200 atomic absorption spectrophotometer operates in the 190-900 nm range using a double beam system that provides superior baseline stability. It is equipped with an integrated impact bead and jacket tip nebulizer, a polypropylene chamber, and a fixed back/forward position burner. Windows-based software WizAArd functions provides easy operation for system control and data processing.

Thermo Accela HPLC System

The Accela HPLC system is equipped with a pump, an autosampler, and a UV/Vis detector. The Accela 600 pump provides flow rates up to 5 mL/min and a maximum pressure of 600 bar with a delay volume of only 90 L. The Accela autosampler features temperature-controlled sample trays, injection valve, and an integrated column oven to maintain sample integrity before and during analysis. The AccelaUV/Vis detector allows for variable wavelength detection with the sensitivity of LightPipe technology.

The ThermoScientific Nicolet 6700 Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) system lets you collect spectra in the mid-IR, far-IR, and near-IR spectral ranges, from 7,800 to 350 cm-1 with a resolution of 0.125 cm-1. This system uses gold mid-IR optics with a KBr beamsplitter, DLaTGS detector w/KBr window and liquid nitrogen-cooled MCT-A detectors. In addition, a Smart iTR with single reflection ZnSe HATR for liquid and powder samples is included.

The Varian VNMRS 500 NMR spectrometer is a high-field instrument equipped with 5mm Dual Channel Probe, ProTune and Varable Temp units. Routinely used for 1H, 13C, 19F and 31P analysis, as well as the full range of advanced 1D- and 2D-experiments. These typically include APT/DEPT, NOE, COSY and HETCOR techniques, all vital to the structural analysis of complex organic molecules. Operation is simplified by easy-to-use standardized protocols, enabled by point-and-click interaction and automation.
