Dear York Cardinals,

What will you do when you Glow Up?

I was a journalism major when I was in college and lucky for me, I got the opportunity to intern on a TV Show (The Open Mind). I was able to work with the director and producer as well as observe and assist in the process in putting the show together.  You may have guessed by now that I am not the journalist that I thought I would become. Nevertheless, after 35 years the opportunity I had to have a real-world learning experience continues to be valuable to me .  I am able apply all the things I learned back then to the social media content I develop and produce today!! (Side note: Follow me on IG @yorkcunyprez or Linkedin: Claudia Schrader, EdD)

But as I was saying…. college is more than just classes —it’s space and time for you to discover who you are and what you are meant to be.   Some of you have already given serious thought to your future career, and others of you are still exploring.  As you think about your future career, remember to take advantage of opportunities to intern, volunteer and connect with professionals in your fields of interest who can guide and inspire you.   The knowledge you gain in the class makes you shine, but the opportunity to apply it in real world settings, is the real Glow up!

Often, we must try on our clothes to see if they really fit.   It’s the same way with careers, real world experiences like internships or talking to professionals in the field) is  also your way of seeing if this career may be a good fit.

Use this time at York wisely.  Talk to your professors and mentors. Connect with a Career advisor who can help connect you to experiences to expand your learning (Room 3E03 in the Academic Core/ career@york.cuny.edu). Explore. Ask questions. Network. College is your chance to be exposed to all the possibilities. The journey you are on now will prepare you for your glow up and it starts with saying yes to opportunity.

Cardinals, you are Ready.  Time to get Set.  And I can’t wait to see your Glow Up!

Have a great week! Stay dry!
