The Bucket List
Dear York Students,
A few years ago, I checked something off my bucket list that most people think is a little wild…. I did the Polar Bear Dip at Coney Island—yes, the tradition where you run straight into the freezing Atlantic Ocean on New Year’s Day. It seemed like a good idea, until I had to go in the water, but once I did, I felt a coldness I had never felt in my entire life, but mostly I felt such a feeling of accomplishment! I felt energized and proud (and cold). I was reminded that life is richer when we boldly pursue the things we dream of doing.
I already know earning your college degree is on your bucket list, but what else is on there? What are the experiences, goals, and adventures you want to accomplish in your lifetime? Some people have traveling to a new country, buying a home, starting a business, or even running a marathon on their bucket list. Others focus on more personal milestones, like reconnecting with family members or developing new skills. Whatever fills your list, a bucket list is really a reminder of what excites you, what matters to you, and what you hope to achieve as you move through life.
Bucket lists are intentional. It nudges you toward curiosity, joy, and personal growth. It also becomes a compass—guiding your choices and helping you stay focused on the life you want to build, not just the days you need to get through.
Your college education plays a powerful role in that journey. Earning your degree will open doors you may not have even considered yet—career opportunities, travel, higher salaries, leadership roles, and new networks. Those open doors create even more opportunities to check off many of the goals on your list.
And here’s the beautiful twist: your bucket list will grow. You will meet people whose stories inspire you. You will learn about places, and possibilities that spark new interests. You will discover strengths you didn’t realize you had. College is not just preparation for life—it’s a place that expands your imagination about what your life can be.
This week, I encourage you to start (or revisit) your bucket list. Write down what you dream of doing, becoming, and experiencing. And remember: every class you attend, every assignment you complete, every challenge you push through (and hopefully every email you read from me) will bring you one step closer to turning those dreams into reality, one step closer to adding another item to your bucket list, and one step closer to checking it off!
Have a purposeful week, Cardinals.
