OFFICIAL STATEMENT

York College Family:

I am sure that like me, you woke to the tragic news of two devastating incidents at universities that took place yesterday. I am deeply saddened for the University of Virginia and University of Idaho campus communities; their students, faculty, staff, and alumni. My thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the victims and their families, as they deal with unimaginable loss and grief.
While more details are still emerging about these tragedies, we know that people may process grief, loss and acts of violence differently. Therefore, we have several resources available that may be helpful in supporting our York College family.
Students may reach out to the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management team who will be able to provide support through our mental health and wellness services. The Counselling Center is located in the Academic Core building - 1G03. Additionally, the Center now offers tele-counseling either by video conferencing or by phone. Call 718-262-2272 to schedule a confidential appointment.
The counseling services at York College are free for eligible students. Please visit the Student Affairs webpage for a list of campus based and external resources for support https://www.york.cuny.edu/counseling-center/student-self-help-resources.
Faculty and staff, I encourage you to talk to one another and talk to our students at this time and always about campus safety, coping with trauma and preparedness. Please also remember that there is an Employee Assistance Program available to you 24/7.
As we reflect on the events of today, please know that the safety of our campus community is our top priority. Public Safety has safety plans in place, which are reviewed and updated in collaboration with our local precinct and other local emergency responders. In addition, the Public Safety team regularly conducts safety drills with students and staff to prepare for a variety of potential situations and provides Active Shooter Preparedness Training several times a year on-campus.
The Public Safety office is in the Academic Core building, Room 1M02, and maintains 24- hour public safety coverage of the campus. The phone number is (718) 262-2222. Dial x2222 from any campus phone or utilize any red emergency phone located throughout the Academic Core for direct access.
As always, we want everyone on our campus to feel empowered to report any unusual or suspicious activity. If you see something, say something. In emergencies, always call 911. For immediate danger or concern about a community member who appears to be a threat to themselves or others, contact Public Safety at x2222 and/or Student Affairs at x2231.
Be well, and care for one another.

Berenecea Johnson Eanes President
