Aviation Club

The Cardinal Aviation Club at York College provides students with valuable opportunities to engage beyond the classroom while exploring careers in aviation. The club organizes a variety of hands-on activities and experiences, including field trips to the NYPD helicopter base at Floyd Bennett Field, airport and Air Traffic Control facility tours, and participation in on-campus events such as Aviation Day. The club also hosts Employer and Alumni Showcases, helping students connect directly with industry professionals and graduates working in the field, and maintains strong connections with organizations such as the Civil Air Patrol.

In addition, for students interested in flying for the first time, the York College Auxiliary funds approximately eight free orientation flights each semester, offering a unique, hands-on introduction to aviation. These flights play a critical role in reinforcing concepts learned in Aviation Management and the Aircraft Dispatcher program by giving students a practical understanding of flight operations, aircraft performance, and operational decision-making in a real-world environment.

The club also provides access to two Redbird flight simulators, available to both club members and all York College students, allowing them to practice and develop their skills in a controlled, realistic setting. In addition, the Cardinal Aviation Club actively collaborates with leading aviation organizations such as Women in Aviation, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Wings at JFK – the new mentoring non-profit for women, and other partners, providing students with expanded networking opportunities and exposure to the broader aviation community.

Together, these opportunities help students build professional awareness, expand their networks, and deepen their understanding of aviation systems. Being a member of the Cardinal Aviation Club enhances students’ academic and professional profiles, demonstrating initiative, leadership, and a strong commitment to the aviation field.
