Eligibility requirements, funding details, application materials, and deadlines for Study Abroad

Eligibility Criteria and Guidelines

  • Students must be currently registered at York College and in good standing. Good standing is defined as the absence of administrative blocks on a student’s record (e.g., Financial Aid, Library, Bursar) and no active disciplinary record.
  • To be eligible, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 at York College at the time of application submission and at the start of travel.
  • An applicant must have completed a minimum of 45 credits, at least 15 of which must have been completed at York College.
  • Funding support of up to sixty (60) percent of the total allowable Study Abroad expenses may be provided, not to exceed $3,000. Applicants are encouraged to apply to additional funding sources to help defray travel‑related expenses.
  • The program will fund only one Study Abroad experience per academic year (August–July).
  • Students may be funded for a maximum of two Study Abroad experiences while enrolled at the College.
  • Students who meet or will meet graduation requirements before the Study Abroad activity takes place are not eligible for funding.
  • Students will be required to submit a report and make a presentation to the York College Association upon return from their experience.
  • Any student who falsifies any submitted documents will be denied funding and may be subject to disciplinary action and/or criminal charges.
  • Completed applications must be received by the following deadlines: May 1 for Fall semester travel, November 1 for Winter travel, December 1 for Spring semester travel, and April 1 for Summer travel.

A complete application consists of the following materials:

  • A completed Study Abroad Scholarship Application Form.
  • A 300‑word narrative statement describing how the Study Abroad experience will enhance the applicant’s overall educational experience. The narrative must be typed in Times New Roman, 12‑point font, and double‑spaced.
  • A letter of recommendation from a York College faculty member, vice president, dean, or unit head who is familiar with the applicant’s educational experience at the College.
  • An unofficial York College transcript. All transcripts will be verified by the selection committee.
  • A signed Waiver and Release Form and proof of travelers’ insurance. If a Waiver and Release Form has already been submitted to the Study Abroad program the applicant will attend, a copy of that waiver may be submitted. Otherwise, an original waiver must be included with the application.
  • Printed documentation of acceptance to the Study Abroad opportunity, including any relevant program details.
  • Final approval of the award is contingent upon acceptance into the Study Abroad program for which the applicant has applied. Study Away programs must be pre‑approved by the appropriate academic department.

Applications that do not include all required materials listed above will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.
