Diversity and Compliance

The Diversity and Compliance Office is responsible for administering the CUNY York College recruitment, hiring, appointment, and equal opportunity ensuring compliance with related laws, rules, and regulations dealing with human rights.

What We Do

The Office of Diversity and Compliance at York College, part of the Office of the President, is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all students, faculty, and staff. Guided by CUNY’s policies and federal, state, and city laws, we ensure that recruitment, employment, promotion, student services, and campus programs are free from discrimination based on race, color, creed, national origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, veteran status, and other protected categories. Through compliance, best practices, and ongoing initiatives, we uphold York College’s commitment to equity, access, and respect for the diverse communities we serve.

How to Report

Sexual harassment and sexual violence can happen to anyone, and support is available if you or someone you know is affected. Each CUNY campus has a Title IX Coordinator—someone trained to listen, provide guidance, and connect you with resources.

Process Overview

Discrimination and Harassment on the Basis of a Protected Class– Claims against individuals

The Office of Diversity and Equity handles preliminary review and investigation, as needed
Reported incidents are tracked in the CUNY Discrimination Portal
When a formal investigation is concluded, factual findings are provided to the College President who determines what, if any, action should be recommended
The matter is then referred to the appropriate office (Student Affairs, Labor Relations, or Academic Affairs) for implementation of the President’s recommended action
Allegations that do not fall within the office’s jurisdiction are referred to the appropriate office or administratively closed

Process Overview

The office of Diversity and Equity handles preliminary intake and investigation
Public Safety files initial incident report
Complainant has the ability to select how to move forward (Support-Based only, Informal Resolution, Formal Investigation)
The Sexual Harassment/Assault Complainant has the ability to report to outside agencies in addition to the campus resources.

Recently Sexually Assaulted?

If the incident occurred on-campus, call Public Safety or 911;
If the incident occurred off-campus, call 911 or go to the local NYPD precinct. Contacting the police does not require you to file charges.
Seek medical attention as soon as possible. Campus Public Safety or the police can help you get medical care or you can go on your own (or with a friend) to an emergency room. http://www.svfreenyc.org
Preserve evidence. You do not need to decide immediately whether to take action against the person who assaulted you. But if you might want to do this, it is important to preserve evidence of the assault. Go to an emergency room and ask for a SAFE or rape exam. (Do not bathe or brush your teeth prior to going.) For a list of hospitals in New York City with this service, go to: http://www.svfreenyc.org Retain the clothing you were wearing in a paper (not plastic) bag. If the assault took place in your home or dorm room, do not rearrange furniture and/or clean up.

Title IX: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities at universities receiving federal funds. Under Title IX, discrimination on the basis of sex can include sexual harassment or sexual violence, such as rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion
