York is 1 of 10 CUNY Campuses to Serve as Polling site for Early Voting
The City University of New York today launched a civic engagement campaign encouraging its students to vote in the upcoming city primary election. The effort is part of the University’s nonpartisan CUNY Votes initiative and features illustrated graphics that will be shared across the University’s digital platforms. The campaign also includes a video message from CUNY student government leaders that reminds students, “when CUNY speaks, New York listens.” As usual, CUNY will also host polling sites on 14 of its campuses for the Primary Election and early voting.
“We strongly urge CUNY students to be engaged and make their voices heard in this upcoming election season,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “A major part of CUNY’s ability to serve New York comes from how our students naturally represent the great diversity of our city, and we are working to ensure that they know how critical their civic engagement is in deciding the city’s future.”
New Yorkers this year will vote for mayor, public advocate, city comptroller, City Council members, borough presidents and local judges. The primary election will be held on Tuesday, June 24; early voting will take place from Saturday, June 14, to Sunday, June 22.
The general election will be held in the fall; the early voting period is scheduled to take place from Oct. 25 through Nov. 2, with Election Day on Nov. 4.
A Ranked Choice Voting Refresher
The University will host an informational webinar about ranked choice voting on May 1 with NYC Votes, the New York City Campaign Finance Board’s voter awareness initiative. Queens College distinguished lecturer and alumnus James Vacca, a former City Council member who served on the 2019 NYC Charter Revision Commission that led to the implementation of ranked choice voting, will lead a session during the webinar about the history and importance behind the voting system. The event will be supported by the CUNY University Student Senate, CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities, CUNY Malave Leadership Academy and New York Public Interest Research Group. Students can register for the webinar.
