Class of '25 Salutatorian Praises York Experience as She Graduates
Sabina Yagudaeva, this year's salutatorian, is graduating from York's BS/MS program in Occupational Therapy, a program known for its comprehensive curriculum and hands-on training. She will join her fellow graduates at the May 28 Commencement at the UBS Arena in Hempstead, Long Island. She shares her journey by reflecting on what she gained at York, which began in 2019 after graduating from Ohr Chana High School in Queens.
Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Yagudaeva moved to the United States with her family at age five. She is the third member of her immediate family to attend York College. Her older sister, Angelina, a 2018 graduate, now works as a community health worker supervisor, while her younger brother, Matat, is currently enrolled in the same BS/MS program Sabina is completing. He is set to graduate with a degree in Occupational Therapy in December 2026.
Asked about her favorite aspect of college life, Yagudaeva highlighted a popular York tradition, the Club Hours. These are weekly events held from 12:00 to 2:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, where students can participate in various club activities, socialize, and take a break from their academic routines.
"They're a great way to connect with others and break up the week. Additionally, the friendships I formed during my time here have been truly invaluable, adding so much to my college experience," she said
She also spoke with a deep appreciation for one of her mentors.
"My fieldwork supervisor, Alexa Moses, has been an incredible mentor to me," Yagudaeva said. "She taught me the essential skills I need to excel as a school-based occupational therapist. Her kindness and approachable nature created a supportive learning environment that truly shaped my journey."
With her degree almost in hand, Yagudaeva is excitedly looking ahead. She is eager to begin her career, ideally working as a school-based or early intervention occupational therapist.
I'm eager to apply my knowledge and skills in a way that positively impacts the lives of children
she said.
But academic success isn't the only milestone Yagudaeva achieved at York. There was a more personal fulfillment as well.
"York College is also where I met and married the love of my life and became a mom to the cutest baby girl," she added. "So much has happened over the six years I spent at York, and each moment has been significant."
