York College will host a powerful afternoon of film, conversation, and community connection with the screening of Behind The Joy, an international award-winning feature film written and directed by filmmaker Jamal Smart. The event is proudly sponsored by Northwell Long Island Jewish Forest Hills.
Behind The Joy shines a spotlight on postpartum depression, an often-overlooked reality that affects 1 in 5 birthing people, particularly within minority communities. Drawing from real-life stories, the film explores the silent battles families face, aiming to break the stigma around maternal mental health while fostering dialogue, healing, and awareness.
The event will feature Aleeia Abraham, Founder of the BlaQue Resource Network, as the Emcee, and Pat Robinson as the Moderator, guiding an impactful day of storytelling and community engagement.
“Too often in our communities, we only come together during difficult times,” said filmmaker Jamal Smart. “This event is about creating space for joy, awareness, and connection—where we can celebrate, laugh, and heal together while addressing a critical issue.”
In recognition of its social impact, Behind The Joy received a Certificate of Recognition from the New York City Mayor’s Office following a screening at Rikers Island Women’s Jail, where the film sparked deep conversations and healing moments among incarcerated mothers.
Since its premiere, Behind The Joy has garnered 23+ international awards and sparked meaningful conversations at film festivals, universities, community centers, and healthcare events across the country. The York College screening marks the film’s Queens premiere and promises to be an unforgettable afternoon of film, dialogue, and community connection.
