My research touches upon both the intergroup relations and close relationships subfields of social psychology. I am interested in understanding how meaningful contact with outgroup members changes our perspective of the entire outgroup (e.g. ethnic, religious, sexual orientation). My work has focused on cross-group friendship, identifying the vital roles of both interpersonal friendship processes (e.g. closeness, trust, self-disclosure) and intergroup friendship processes (e.g. discussing group-relevant issues, taking part in an outgroup friend’s culture). My two most recent lines of research investigate 1) whether online interactions can facilitate cross-group friendship and 2) experiences of contact with religious outgroup members and views about media portrayals of religion. Finally, I have recently developed a course designed to introduce and familiarize undergraduates with scientific literature, and am currently collecting data to evaluate the efficacy of this new curriculum.
