00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.000
Hi,
00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:12.000
my name is Lisa Wade and I'm an artist in
Southeast Queens, Jamaica.
00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:17.000
This particular show is centered around the
pandemic.
00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:23.000
The title of the exhibition is called Emerging
from
00:00:23.130 --> 00:00:29.360
Quar antine: Notes on the Pandemic. Art has
always been fascinating to
00:00:29.360 --> 00:00:35.990
me, but I never pursued it until I had the
time
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:42.000
for it. And I guess you could say I'm retired
now.
00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:47.000
I think COVID just accelerated that process
for me.
00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:53.000
The first piece that I'm going to talk about
is a photograph on top of a photograph
00:00:53.140 --> 00:00:59.150
and it's called Life in Shreds. You can never
imagine what the
00:00:59.150 --> 00:01:04.990
photograph is exactly because it looks very
muted, but it's a tree trunk.
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:09.000
I was in Forest Park and I saw this beautiful
tree trunk.
00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:13.000
I brought it home and then I started playing
around with different things.
00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:20.000
And then I superimposed the same photograph on
top of it, but I manually shredded
00:01:20.160 --> 00:01:26.220
every piece of that photograph. I was thinking
about how many
00:01:26.220 --> 00:01:33.000
people have lost their lives or lost what they
were comfortable with in their lives.
00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:38.000
So I started cutting up the pieces. One
photograph is as it is.
00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:43.940
And the second photograph I basically cut into
shreds. I felt like everything was shredding away from
00:01:43.940 --> 00:01:50.180
me and shedding away from me. I think many
people have lost so much and their
00:01:50.180 --> 00:01:55.000
life feels like it's in shreds during
COVID-19.
00:01:55.000 --> 00:02:01.120
The second piece is a piece that reflects how
I
00:02:01.210 --> 00:02:07.770
was feeling during all the demonstrations of
Black
00:02:07.850 --> 00:02:11.980
Lives Matter and all the killings that
happened in 2019.
00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:18.000
2020. I couldn't get away from the TV. I
couldn't stop watching it.
00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:24.000
I was amazed. I was horrified. I was proud
00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:30.000
of the protesters. I was proud that everyone
said across the world that that was enough
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:35.000
because that's how I felt. I've been feeling
like that for a long time.
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:41.000
The piece is an assembly, assemblage I think
is what it's called, of various things.
00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:45.000
I found a piece of metal on the street last
year.
00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:48.610
And I said, "Oh, this is interesting." I said,
"Oh, this looks like a face." I was just a little bit
00:02:48.610 --> 00:02:51.510
of a face. I was just a little bit of a face.
I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:02:51.510 --> 00:02:54.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:02:54.510 --> 00:02:57.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:02:57.510 --> 00:03:00.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:00.510 --> 00:03:03.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:03.510 --> 00:03:06.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:06.510 --> 00:03:09.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:09.510 --> 00:03:12.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:12.510 --> 00:03:15.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:15.510 --> 00:03:18.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:18.510 --> 00:03:21.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:21.510 --> 00:03:24.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:24.510 --> 00:03:27.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:27.510 --> 00:03:30.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:30.510 --> 00:03:33.510
bit of a face. I was just a little bit of a
face. I was just a little bit of a face. I was just a little
00:03:33.510 --> 00:03:38.000
bit of a face. I put it as like it was
exploding out of him.
00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:43.000
And that's how I felt. I felt this man was
squeezed. Every breath was out of him.
00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:48.000
Everything about his life was just being taken
away.
00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:54.000
And he was expelling the air and everything.
So I added this reminder
00:03:54.000 --> 00:04:00.000
of his African heritage. I wanted to include
that for him.
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:05.000
I found this photo clipping and it said,
"Dreams deferred, dreams denied."
00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:11.350
And I really, I knew where it belonged. It
belonged on the face of the face of George
00:04:11.350 --> 00:04:16.000
Floyd. So I added that. And then I knew I was
done.
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:22.110
Because I said all I could say about it. The
last piece is an abstract
00:04:22.110 --> 00:04:28.990
piece on canvas with acrylic paints using a
method called
00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:35.000
flow acrylic. It has reds and blues and a lot
of things that represent COVID-19.
00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:41.020
That red you'll see throughout my work. I
started dropping the red paint on
00:04:41.020 --> 00:04:47.000
the canvas. And I started thinking of my
cousin who died from COVID at 55 years old.
00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:51.000
She had a whole life in front of her. It was
August.
00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:57.570
It wasn't March, February. It was August when
we should have had a handle
00:04:57.570 --> 00:05:03.700
on this thing. I became angry. I became
enraged. I started screaming at the
00:05:03.700 --> 00:05:08.000
canvas. I started throwing the paint at the
canvas.
00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:14.250
I've never been so emotional my whole life for
over 300,000
00:05:14.280 --> 00:05:20.000
people who died unnecessarily. And every time
I hear that number,
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.990
it's 300,000, whatever, whatever, and Wanda.
00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:27.000
Because that was my cousin.
00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:36.000
So that's COVID. That's the pandemic. That's
life in quarantine.
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:42.370
Let's find notes from the pandemic. I'm
thankful to be able to share this with
00:05:42.370 --> 00:05:48.700
you. I'm also thankful to get it out of me.
And I'm looking forward to new
00:05:48.700 --> 00:05:53.000
things. Thank you to York College.
00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:58.000
Thank you to the Southeast Queens Artist
Alliance. Thank you for all the support.
00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:04.000
Thank you for Queens Center of the Arts for
allowing us to have this grant to showcase
00:06:04.190 --> 00:06:10.290
our work. To let you know the Southeast Queens
has got some good talent out
00:06:10.290 --> 00:06:11.000
here.
