00:00:00.020 --> 00:00:06.970
What is Interlibrary Loan? Interlibrary
00:00:06.970 --> 00:00:11.000
Loan, abbreviated ILL, is the borrowing and
lending of materials between libraries.
00:00:11.020 --> 00:00:17.000
This service is usually free, but you have to
plan ahead to allow time for books to be sent from libraries
00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.000
from around the country or even from around
the world.
00:00:21.020 --> 00:00:27.230
Use Interlibrary Loan when: York doesn't have
the article you need or CUNY doesn't
00:00:27.230 --> 00:00:29.000
have the book you need.
00:00:30.020 --> 00:00:36.240
This tutorial covers creating an ILLiad
account, requesting items through the library's
00:00:36.240 --> 00:00:43.000
databases, requesting books through WorldCat,
and ILLiad's interface.
00:00:43.020 --> 00:00:49.000
Our library uses a program called ILLiad to
manage the Interlibrary Loan process.
00:00:49.020 --> 00:00:54.040
The librarians here at York still do the
behind-the-scenes work, but ILLiad allows you to check the status
00:00:54.040 --> 00:01:00.000
of your request, download electronically
delivered materials, and request renewals for books.
00:01:00.020 --> 00:01:06.620
Before we get into requesting an ILL, you must
first make sure you have an ILLiad
00:01:06.620 --> 00:01:13.000
account. From the library's webpage, click on
Interlibrary Loan in the middle of the screen.
00:01:13.020 --> 00:01:19.040
Then click on Connect to ILLiad. This is how
you get into ILLiad to check on your
00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:25.310
requests. If you don't have an account yet,
click on First Time
00:01:25.310 --> 00:01:31.650
Users. Read the screen that appears, and then
click on First Time Users Click Here on the
00:01:31.650 --> 00:01:37.000
bottom of the page. Fill out the registration
form.
00:01:37.020 --> 00:01:42.000
Be sure your email address is correct, because
that's how we'll communicate with you. Also, keep in mind
00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:49.000
that you must have an activated, unblock ed
York Library barcode number in order to request ILL materials.
00:01:49.020 --> 00:01:57.000
Once you've completed the registration form,
click on Sub mit Information.
00:01:57.020 --> 00:02:03.000
This form will be sent to the library for us
to check your barcode and OK you for ILL borrowing.
00:02:03.020 --> 00:02:08.000
Once you have an ILLiad account, you can
request materials.
00:02:08.020 --> 00:02:13.920
Most often people request an ILL from within
the library's databases,
00:02:13.920 --> 00:02:20.160
so let's start there. As you might know, all
of our databases link to each other through the Find
00:02:20.160 --> 00:02:26.000
It button. This is also where you will see the
option to request an item through Interlibrary Loan.
00:02:26.020 --> 00:02:35.000
For example, let's click on Articles and More,
and then Academic Search Complete.
00:02:35.020 --> 00:02:40.000
Search Education and Labor Supply.
00:02:40.020 --> 00:02:46.390
And click to look at number 3. Since we don't
see an option
00:02:46.390 --> 00:02:52.270
for full text, we can click on Find It. If we
had the article in another database,
00:02:52.270 --> 00:02:57.000
you would be directed there. In this case,
York doesn't have access to this journal,
00:02:57.000 --> 00:03:01.000
so you can see the option Request Via
Interlibrary Loan.
00:03:01.020 --> 00:03:07.180
If you click on that, it will open ILLiad.
Simply log in to ILLiad and
00:03:07.180 --> 00:03:15.000
you will see the request form all filled out
for you. Look it over.
00:03:19.020 --> 00:03:25.020
And then click on Submit Request. York's
librarians will now try to get the item for you from
00:03:25.020 --> 00:03:30.430
another library, and you will get emailed when
your item has arrived. Articles are usually delivered
00:03:30.430 --> 00:03:35.000
electronically, and the email you receive will
tell you how to log into ILLiad to view the article.
00:03:35.020 --> 00:03:40.000
Books must be picked up at and returned to the
library's reference desk.
00:03:40.020 --> 00:03:46.160
The Lending Library tells us the due date, but
you can always request a renewal if you need it
00:03:46.160 --> 00:03:47.000
for longer.
00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:56.310
You will also see a link to ILLiad when you
are searching the database WorldCat, which is listed under
00:03:56.310 --> 00:04:02.550
Other Links on the library's webpage. From the
library website, click on Other Links
00:04:02.550 --> 00:04:08.880
on the left- hand side. Then click on WorldCat
Public
00:04:08.880 --> 00:04:14.000
Version. Let's search for the book Disturbing
Practice.
00:04:14.020 --> 00:04:20.730
Click on the one that you want to see. When
you scroll
00:04:20.730 --> 00:04:25.000
down, you can see no other CUNY libraries own
this book.
00:04:25.020 --> 00:04:31.190
You will also see a Request via ILLiad option
right
00:04:31.190 --> 00:04:37.290
in the middle of the screen. From here you can
follow
00:04:37.290 --> 00:04:42.000
the same steps we just went over before.
00:04:42.020 --> 00:04:48.000
ILLiad's features allow you to create a new
request,
00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:52.000
view items you have checked out, and more.
Let's go take a look.
00:04:52.020 --> 00:04:57.000
From the library's webpage, click on
Interlibrary Loan,
00:04:57.000 --> 00:05:03.210
then connect to ILLiad. After logging in, you
can see your options on the
00:05:03.210 --> 00:05:10.000
left. Under New Requests, you can create a new
ILL request.
00:05:10.020 --> 00:05:16.100
Select the appropriate format, article, book,
etc. Fill out the information and
00:05:16.100 --> 00:05:22.940
click Submit Request. In the View section, you
can see articles electronically
00:05:22.940 --> 00:05:29.230
received, items you have checked out, and
more. For example, if you wanted to renew a book,
00:05:29.230 --> 00:05:36.000
you could click on Checked Out Items, click on
the transaction number, and then click Request Renewal.
00:05:36.020 --> 00:05:40.730
York will ask the other library to renew your
book, and you will be notified if the renewal has been
00:05:40.730 --> 00:05:47.000
granted or denied. The Tools section allows
you to change your account information.
00:05:47.020 --> 00:05:55.000
If you need more assistance, contact the
Reference Desk at 718-262-2034.
