York College Launches New Master’s of Science, Nursing Education

York College has launched a new Master’s of Science, Nursing Education (MSN)! This new Master’s program builds on the success of York College’s first-rate, competitive programs, the RN-BS track, and the Generic Nursing baccalaureate track, which have been recognized and nationally ranked byU.S. News & World Report,Nursing School Almanac, andRNCareers.org.

How will students benefit from earning a Master’s of Science, in Nursing Education? This degree will allow individuals to advance within the profession of nursing. The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, the NY State Education Department, and regulating organizations for accreditation require that an individual hold no less than a Master’s degree in Nursing Education to teach in bachelor’s level nursing programs in higher education. Further, many healthcare facilities now require a Master’s in Nursing Education to teach in their nursing professional development departments. It is also hoped with the attainment of an MSN degree, that graduates will then consider pursuing a doctoral degree in nursing.

How is York’s Master’s in Nursing Education Program unique?

Our program provides an outstanding opportunity for students to learn to teach nursing at a college level and to be nurse educators in a clinical setting, such as in a hospital, a clinic, and at community organizations providing health care. Specifically, our students will benefit from hands-on experiential learning, as they will partner with faculty to teach undergraduate nursing courses. In addition, they will develop their skills as nurse educators in order to enhance the level of instruction to nursing students, new nurses, and ongoing needs for professional staff development.

How do Faculty Support Students?

York College of Nursing draws faculty who are invested in teaching and supporting future generations of the profession and who facilitate the spirit of inquiry in their students. With advanced education in the field, they have earned terminal degrees or are enrolled in doctoral programs. But it is their open-door policies, mutual respect, and individualized attention that students most appreciate.

When can students start to enroll in the new Master’s program?

The program is to begin in the fall of 2023. The application process will begin in mid-April.

How long is the program?

The program is to be completed full-time in 2 years.

What are the qualifications for applying to the program?

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in a nursing program from a regionally accredited institution, a minimum of a 3.0 overall GPA, a current and valid RN NYS license, two years of experience as a Registered Nurse, and a passing Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
