Veterans Day Becomes a Week of Celebrations at York
Veterans Day has been a protracted celebration of York's veteran community this year as the college feted students and employees for their service in the various branches of the U.S. Military.

On Wednesday, November 13, interim President Dr. Claudia Schrader sponsored a luncheon to celebrate those who served our country and now serve the college as employees or attend as students.
“Thank you for your service,” said Dr. Schrader. “As a daughter of a veteran who served in Germany, I know the importance of service so I thank you for your service. I wanted to have this little celebration for you so enjoy the meal and please encourage your friends to come to York College.”
Nicholas Jones, executive director of Enrollment Management, expressed delight in being able to help host the veterans. “This gathering is our chance to pause, celebrate, and express our deepest gratitude to our veterans -- individuals who have shown courage, dedication, and sacrifice in service to our country,” said Jones. “Each of you has contributed in ways that inspire us, and today, we’re here to show you just how much you mean to our York College community. “Thank you for your service, your resilience, and your presence here with us.”
Larry Eaton, Veterans Affairs manager at York, reflected that it is “an honor to acknowledge and show appreciation for the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.”
Eaton said he takes pride in being “the child of an Army Soldier” who served during the Vietnam War, but also learned about service from his mother as well.
“My mother was a living example of what military excellence was all about,” said Eaton. She instilled in me, pride and determination to accomplish anything I put my mind to. And that is the attitude that most, if not all, our military veteran students exemplify here at York College.
“These students, have an unwavering resolve to continue their academic pursuits and to be active members of society,” said Eaton “I am proud to be a part of the team that helps assist the transition into the world and continue the legacy of excellence well into the future.”
One of York’s well-known veterans is Lt. Carlos R. Suarez, deputy director of the Department of Public Safety, who made time to attend. “Hosting an appreciation luncheon for veterans is a wonderful way to honor their service and sacrifices,” said Lt. Suarez. “As a retired Army veteran with 21 years of service, I feel honored to receive this recognition.”
As usual, York’s veterans participated in New York City’s Veterans Day Parade on Monday and on Tuesday they enjoyed Veterans Movie Day. For more, visit York’s week of celebration on the webpage.
