Office of Student Activities & CCSD host Presidential Debate Watch Parties

It was a historic evening for dozens of York College students who attended the 2024 Presidential Debate Watch Party sponsored by the Office of Student Activities last night.

More than 85 people filled the faculty dining room to watch the debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The diverse range of topics, from immigration, abortion rights, the economy, foreign policy, and much more, provided a comprehensive understanding of the candidates' views. The debate was the first time Harris and Trump met face to face. The watch party viewers listened intensely and, at times, depending on a candidate’s response to a question, would break out in laughter, clap their hands and cheer, or whisper their commentary.

Before the debate, Dean Dr. George White opened the evening with his thoughts on the importance of voting, supported by historical facts and events. He then moderated a panel discussion with Dr. Michael Sharpe, Dr. Robin Harper, and Dr. Anthony Sparacino, which moved into a Q&A with watch party attendees.

Throughout the evening, food was served, and there was an opportunity to register to vote.

Online, the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities | York College (CCSD@York) co-hosted a non-partisan virtual watch party of the U.S. Presidential Debate, emceed by Distinguished Professor and former NYC Councilmember James Vacca.

This virtual event complemented York’s in-person watch party, offering an inclusive opportunity for over 103 students, faculty, and staff who could not attend in person. It provided a platform to analyze key debate aspects, such as policy proposals and debate tactics, and included important information on voter registration, early voting, and absentee voting. This collaboration highlights York College’s commitment to civic engagement and ensures accessibility for all members of the university's community.
