Fall Open House Welcomes Excited Prospective Students and Families

The York College gymnasium was a hub of activities of a different sort on Sunday (November 10) as scores of high school students and their families converged on the campus for Fall Open House 2024.

Faculty meet with parents and children at the recent open house.

The event kicked off with brief welcome remarks from Anthony Davis, director of Admissions who introduced the speakers, Nicholas Jones, executive director of Enrollment Management and Dr. George White, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.

Jones, a veteran York College employee, provided a comprehensive overview of what’s available at York and shared the CUNY announcement that application fees are waivered for high school students until November 15, 2024.

Prospective York students and parents gather to learn York's offerings.

Covering all the bases, Jones added, “But affordability isn’t everything. Our professors are not only experts in their fields; they bring real-world experiences and genuine dedication to helping you succeed. They’re here to support you on your path, whether in the classroom, through research opportunities, or as mentors.”

In addition to faculty representatives across the disciplines staffing tables, including Physics, Nursing, Performing and Fine Arts, Teacher Education, Health and Human Performance, Environmental Health, the CLIP program, SEEK and so much more, the Open House featured support systems. The support systems included  help with FAFSA, TAP, and Dream Act applications in York’s FAFSA lab, along with assistance for any admitted students needing guidance with the enrollment process. There were also campus tours built into the day’s activities.

Invoking Mahatma Gandhi’s famous admonition, “Learn like you will live forever, live like you’ll die tomorrow,” Dean White spoke on behalf of interim President Claudia Schrader and Provost Derrick Brazill.

“York College is home to outstanding faculty and staff; faculty who teach in over 50 different disciplines, programs and specialty areas and staff who lead extracurricular activities, provide counseling or design programming to challenge your preconceptions, build community and help you live your fullest life,” said Dr. White. “York is the place where you can do exactly as Gandhi commanded in that quote. I cannot do justice to all of those programs, so I will just give you some highlights,” he said, listing a litany of York’s majors and other offerings.

White added that at York College, “we specialize in making the seemingly impossible, possible. Despite the anxiety or the fear you may feel about your future because of the results of Tuesday’s elections, you can win your future. You can win this year. You can win this month. You can win this very moment by registering for Winter or Spring classes…you can win,” he told the almost 100 prospects. “Despite the uncertainty, there is one thing that is certain, you can win at York College.”
