Dr. Desamero Appointed Director of Undergraduate Research Program

It is with great excitement that we announce the appointment of Dr. Ruel Desamero as Director of the Undergraduate Research Program.

The Undergraduate Research Program was launched in January 2010 by former Provost Ivelaw L. Griffith and Dr. Desamero becomes the fourth Director in the program’s history. Dr. Desamero, a Professor of Chemistry, brings to the position a keen interest in expanding research opportunities for all York students, irrespective of their Major.

Dr. Desamero is an expert in Biochemistry with various scholarly publications in journals like "Biochemistry," the "Journal of Physical Chemistry," the "Journal of Raman Spectroscopy or Vibrational Spectroscopy," and refereed presentations at conferences like the Biophysical Society Annual Meeting or the American Chemical Society National Meeting and Exposition.

He has been awarded a number of internal and federal grants, such as awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) and most recently the United States Department of Education (US DEd). His recently awarded Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) grant from US Ed fits nicely into his new position as the Director of Undergraduate Research. He has also received several PSC-CUNY grants while here at York. He mentors York College students in his lab and hosts Visiting Scholars from around the world. In addition, he regularly supervises or participates in dissertation research by Ph.D. candidates at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Dr. Desamero received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut and received advanced training from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. We are honored that he has agreed to take on this important role.
