Bridging the Gap: Resource Fair Enhances Support for Student Enrollment and Success
The event was well attended by more than 250 from the campus community
Student leaders from the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities played a major role in the success of the 3rd Annual Resource Fair.
The 3rd Annual Resource Fair, a hallmark event organized by the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) at York College, saw a significant expansion this year. Over 250 attendees, including students, faculty, and staff, gathered for the event. Notably, this year marked the first time high school students were invited, a milestone made possible by Charmaine Townsell, director of Student Wellness and Resources. She spearheaded a newly-funded initiative, York EmpowerEd, with support from a New York State Assemblymember, the York College Foundation, and the CUNY Central Office. This initiative is designed to bridge the gap for students with disabilities as they transition to college.
The event was a platform for York College students with disabilities to interact with high school students and gain insights into the available services and resources. Raymond Perez, interim University Director of Disability Programs from the CUNY Central Office, and the proud disabled student leaders from the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD) played a pivotal role in the event’s success. Their active participation, along with colleagues from various campuses, was instrumental in promoting an inclusive academic environment.
Attendees were introduced to a wide array of on-campus support services, including the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD), the Counseling Center, the Women’s Center for Gender Justice, the Office of Veterans Affairs, and Health Services. In addition to campus resources, community organizations and government offices such as the NYC Department of Health and the Department of Social Services participated, offering vital assistance for students navigating college life. Volunteers from Bottomless Closet showcased interview-ready workwear, helping students prepare for job interviews.
Ultimately, the Resource Fair was a testament to York College’s unwavering commitment to nurturing an inclusive environment where students receive the support they need for their educational journeys. By facilitating connections between students and the necessary resources, York College truly embodies its spirit: “York College—Where Futures Take Flight.”
