York’s 60th Anniversary State of the College: Celebrating Progress, Confronting Challenges
York College President Claudia V. Schrader and her cabinet presented the State of the College in October 2026, highlighting the institution’s achievements while acknowledging challenges that require strategic action as York enters its 60th anniversary. Thorns among the rose[s] as she calls them.
A large gathering of students, faculty, staff and administrators joined President Claudia V. Schrader at the recent State-of-the-College where she, VP Eduardo Rios, Finance and Administration, VP Johana I. Rivera, Enrollment and Retention Management; and others also presented in their areas of specialty. The event, held in the Atrium, was followed by alfresco dining and live music led by Music professor, Dr. Thomas Zlabinger.
After reading a heartfelt letter from a grateful graduate now pursuing a doctorate in veterinary medicine, Schrader reflected on the College’s mission: “The measure of a college is not simply who it enrolls, but who it empowers and who are empowered by it,” she remarked.
Describing York as existing in a state of “duality,” she noted that the College is “surrounded by roses, yet we cannot ignore the thorns.” Challenges include staffing shortages, strategic hiring needs and a budget deficit. However, first-time, full-time student enrollment and retention have improved this fall.
Schrader outlined plans to strengthen enrollment, prioritize revenue-generating hires and improve facilities to expand rental opportunities. Campus enhancements, including renovated bathrooms and other upgrades, also signal continued progress.
