York Student Leader Takes on Jamaica Q 5K With Purpose

When Luis “Junior” Alvarez lines up for the Jamaica Q 5K on Saturday, September 26, the 3.1 miles ahead will represent far more than a race.
Once weighing approximately 450 pounds, Junior has lost about 250 pounds through diet and exercise, including regular workouts at York’s Fitness Center. Now, he is bringing that same determination to the starting line while encouraging other students to believe in what they can achieve.
Junior’s commitment to disability advocacy has grown alongside his personal transformation. With the support of the York community, he has continued to improve his health and strengthen his skills as a student leader. Today, he serves as Chair of the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD) and an officer of CCSD@York, representing students across CUNY.
As a queer, Latino student with a disability, Junior brings his lived experiences to his leadership. He hopes his story encourages disabled and LGBTQ+ students to embrace who they are, advocate for themselves, and take on challenges they may not have thought possible.
That message reflects CSD’s goals for students: understanding their rights and responsibilities, knowing how to access resources, and confidently advocating for what they need.
During his time at York, Junior has represented students with disabilities at CUNY-wide events, engaged with University leaders and elected officials, and advocated for greater access and opportunities for students with disabilities.
“I’ve had the privilege of knowing Junior since his time as a student leader at Bronx Community College, and it has been wonderful to watch his continued growth and success at York,” said Charmaine Townsell, Senior Director of Student Wellness & Resources. “I’m grateful to President Claudia Schrader and the Office of the President, as well as the many faculty, staff, and students who continue to support Junior and students like him. That support helps our students thrive, and I’m grateful to be part of it.”
The Jamaica Q 5K gives Junior another opportunity to give back. He is asking friends, colleagues, and supporters to sponsor his run by donating to the York College Fund for Students with Disabilities and helping others move forward.
Crossing the finish line on Saturday will represent more than 3.1 miles. It will celebrate how far Junior has come and what is possible when students have the determination, support, and opportunity to keep moving forward. For Junior and the students he hopes to inspire, the finish line is only the beginning.
