Becoming Artists: 8 York College Students Transform SEQAA House

The Southeast Queens Artist Alliance (SEQAA) presents In the Making: The Process of Becoming, a limited-time exhibition featuring eight student artists from York College, CUNY. On view from September 19–30 at the SEQAA House, 407A Colonels Row on Governors Island, the show highlights works by Nakaya Emanuel, Jasmin Shirley, Anjali Sahai, Josmairy Sanchez, Jennah Guman, Melanie Henriquez, Rabbi Yaw I Awuah, and DeShauna Carr, students of York College Adjunct Lecturer Sally Boon Matthews.

Spanning analog photography, painting, installation, poetry, handmade books, and sculpture, the exhibition centers a rarely spotlighted moment: when artists are still students, actively experimenting, questioning, and taking creative risks. Rather than presenting a finished arrival, In the Making invites audiences to witness artistic identities in formation.

By bringing York College’s diverse commuter student body into a professional exhibition space, SEQAA strengthens connections between Southeast Queens and Governors Island, extending its mission to support artists at every stage of their careers.
