Jonathan K. Gray ’11 Champions Freelance Workers

Jonathan K. Gray, a member of the York College Class of 2011, has built a career advocating for freelance workers as Director of Benefits and Member Services for Freelancers Union, a nonprofit supporting more than 500,000 independent workers through advocacy, education, and benefits.

Freelancers Union provides free membership, workshops, and resources to help independent workers protect themselves, including legal assistance with nonpayment issues. Gray oversees the organization’s benefits and member services efforts.

Gray arrived at York and thrived in Political Science, where he was mentored by Professors Conrad Dyer and Michael Sharpe. Despite a long commute from Spring Valley, NY, he valued York’s connection to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, which provides mentorship and other opportunities to students of member colleges.

While working nights and completing a City Council internship, Gray completed his degree and launched a multifaceted career. In addition to his role at Freelancers Union, he is an insurance agent and real estate broker.
