English Department Celebrates Faculty Publications

Professors Andie Silva and Shereen Inayatulla

The work of four faculty members in York’s English Department is highlighted in the latest issue of WSQ (Women’s Studies Quarterly). The issue, titled “Body Matters,” was co-edited by Professors Andie Silva and Shereen Inayatulla, and features written contributions from Professor Raquel Coy (Lecturer and Writing Across the Curriculum Coordinator) and Professor Tuka Al-Sahlani (Adjunct Lecturer and doctoral student/Digital Fellow at the CUNY Graduate Center).

WSQ: Body Matters explores how the physical body (re)defines feminist scholarship, art, and activism amid the environmental, political, and global emergencies shaping our current moment.

Within the current paradigm of colonial exploitation, our bodies remain sites of scrutiny, violence, commodification, racialization, policing, displacement, and strategic dehumanization. This moment calls for a renewed feminist critique of body politics and personhood. Body Matters examines how bodies marked by intersectional identities become loci of social and political violence, while simultaneously serving as powerful vehicles for resistance, triumph, and decolonial justice.

Dr. George White, Dean of the York College School of Arts and Sciences, shared his delight at this latest accomplishment from the English department.

"The College proudly supported Dr. Inayatulla and Dr. Silva when they became co-editors of WSQ," said Dean White. "Their hard work, and this special issue, is proof that these scholars (as well as the contributors to the "Body Matters" special edition) are successfully ushering WSQ through the current anti-choice, anti-woke, anti-intellectual forces pervading public discourse. Their genius and steadfastness have helped to burnish the journal's reputation as a leading venue in feminist scholarship and bolster York College's reputation within the University!"
