York Attorney Participates in Career Day at Queens High School for the Sciences
Career Day at the Queens High School for the Sciences (QHSS), located on the York College campus, has become an invaluable opportunity for students to connect with professional resources on-site while strengthening campus connections.
These resources feature guest speakers and panelists from diverse fields, including volunteers from the York professional community. This year, building on the success of 2024, Russell Platzek, Esq., executive director of the York College Office of Legal Affairs and Labor Relations, was invited back as a panelist to discuss career opportunities in law.
Sessions were held for each grade level, from first-year students to seniors. While many students at QHSS, a specialized high school, are focused on careers in the sciences, they found Platzek’s insights into the intersection of law and science to be eye-opening and valuable, as they explored legal specializations they may not have previously considered.
“It’s a great opportunity to talk to students about the practice of law,” said Platzek. “I enjoy giving them a sense of what a career in law can be and helping to open doors for them. Additionally, it’s a wonderful way to strengthen the relationship between our campus and our neighbors at the Queens High School for the Sciences.”
The event, held during the spring 2025 semester, took place at the high school and featured an engaging Q&A session. Students asked a variety of questions, ranging from which legal dramas the lawyer enjoys watching on TV to the steps involved in pursuing a career in law.
For their part, the high school expressed delight in the value-added experience for the students.
“Partnerships like the one between York College and QHSS play a vital role in preparing students for future success. Through mentorship and engagement with experienced professionals -- such as Russell, whose legal background offers real-world insight -- QHSS students gain exposure to potential career paths, develop critical thinking skills, and are empowered to envision and pursue their goals with greater confidence.”
