Transfer Student Grateful for Meaningful Scholarship and Faculty Support

Jessica Athena Zarate, an upper-sophomore transfer student majoring in Sociology at York College, has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the Latino Court Officers Society. This boost is not just a financial relief, but a steppingstone that will help her complete her degree and achieve her academic goals.

Zarate began her college journey several years ago at LaGuardia Community College but stepped away before finishing her studies. Now, as a transfer student at York, she is determined to complete her degree.

Despite the challenges, Zarate manages to balance her coursework with a full-time remote position at Fidelis Care, a major health insurance provider.

“Dr. Anthony Sparacino, assistant professor of Political Science, was my first professor on my first day in my first class at York College,” Zarate recalls. “He is amazing and very fair -- a great asset to York. I asked him for a referral, and I cried when I saw it. I’m a mature student with two kids, a husband, and a full-time job.”

Dr. Sparacino’s heartfelt recommendation underscores Zarate’s commitment and character. “I have had the pleasure of getting to know Jessica this past semester, during which she took my Politics and Government in the United States course,” he wrote. “Jessica was a class leader, demonstrating a strong work ethic. She could always be counted on to participate in class discussions and displayed intellectual curiosity and a dedication to engaging rigorously with the material.”

He also praised her consistency: “Another element of Jessica’s performance in class that stands out is her reliability,” Sparacino wrote in his referral. “Jessica was a class leader in every class session, regardless of the topic -- from the functioning of Congress to problems with survey research to urban planning. She showed a willingness to explore a wide range of topics and perspectives.”

For Zarate, the scholarship represents more than financial relief; it symbolizes the opportunity to continue growing as both a student and a mother. “It allows me to be a mom and go to school,” she said, noting that her schedule, which includes both online and evening in-person classes, fits well with her family life.

Congratulations to Ms. Zarate and to the Sociology Department on this meaningful scholarship that will help advance her goals!
