Smith attended the 86th Annual Conference of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NYSAHPERD) in late November. Representing himself and York alumni Tiffany Woodbine and Ravindra Shivcharran—who were unable to attend due to work commitments—Smith confidently delivered their collaborative presentation. All three are dedicated participants in York College’s New York Men Teach program, led by Mr. Richard France.
The presentation, titled “Wellness and Social Justice: A Nexus of Opportunities from the Social Justice Summer Camp at York College, CUNY,” highlighted the innovative work of York College’s Dr. Leslie Keiler, Chair of Teacher Education, and Professor Lisa Dunn-Lockhart. Now in its second year, the Social Justice Summer Camp integrates wellness and social justice through science, art, and physical education for elementary and middle school students.
Under the guidance of Dr. Victor Ramsey, an adjunct faculty member in Health and Human Performance, and with the support of Department Chair Dr. Nicholas Grosskopf and Deputy Chair Dr. Galila Werber Zion, Smith exemplified his characteristic professionalism and dedication to advancing education.
Beyond his presentation, Smith also served as a panelist during a session on student teaching. His valuable insights as a first-year educator inspired aspiring professionals and underscored the impactful training and preparation York College provides its graduates.
Smith’s contributions at the conference are a testament to York College’s commitment to excellence and the influential role of its alumni in shaping the future of education.
