Denim Day: A Statement of Solidarity and Action

The York College community gathered yesterday in honor of Denim Day, a powerful global movement dedicated to raising awareness about sexual assault and standing in solidarity with survivors. This annual observance was inspired by a 1998 court ruling in Italy where a young woman's sexual assault case was overturned because she was wearing tight jeans—the court claimed she must have helped remove them, thereby implying consent. Outraged by this injustice, people around the world began wearing denim to protest victim-blaming and support survivors, and thus, Denim Day was born.

At York's event, participants were invited to share messages of hope, strength, and support by writing positive affirmations and encouraging thoughts directly onto a pair of jeans—a symbolic act that transformed a painful narrative into one of empowerment and unity. These jeans became a canvas of healing, visibly demonstrating our collective commitment to breaking the silence around sexual violence. Special remarks were given by York College's President Dr. Claudia Schrader, Dr. Selena T. Rodgers, PhD, LCSW-R, Professor of Social Work; Founding Director, MSW Program; Chairperson, Department of Social Work; School of Health Sciences and Professional Programs; Chief James Assmann, Director of Public Safety; and Dr. Danielle Holmes Ed.D, Chief Diversity Officer/Title IX Coordinator/ 504-ADA Coordinator.

In addition to raising awareness, we also distributed menstruation items to support those in need, further emphasizing the importance of dignity, health, and accessibility in our communities.

A special thanks to everyone who wore denim yesterday, not just as a fashion statement but as a statement of solidarity and action.
