Back-to-School Fair Brings Joy and Resources for Children and Families

In addition to its primary role as an outstanding institution of higher learning, York College has long embraced a secondary role as an essential social asset in the Southeast Queens community.
In partnership with the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), the College recently hosted its Second Annual Back-to-School Fair. The event, designed to support local families, provided a wide range of resources. More than 675 students, from Pre-K through college, had their choices of school supplies, clothing, coats, shoes, groceries, services, and other much-needed resources.
The fair welcomed numerous nonprofit organizations and city agencies, including the 103rd Precinct’s Domestic Violence Unit, FDNY Fire Safety representatives, Southern Queens Park, and Harlem Dowling-West Side Center for Children and Family Services (Jamaica branch), whose representatives emphasized, “We are part of the solution.” Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens, MetroPlus Health, Infant Safe Sleep, NYC Public Schools’ Office of School Health, and NYC Probation’s Strengthening Communities initiative also participated.

“We are here to give back to the community,” said Probation Officer Clay when asked about their role at the fair. “When we communicate with the other vendors, if somebody on our caseload needs something, we are here to connect them to that resource.”
Other participants included the Queens Public Library (on wheels), which helped children apply for their first library cards and borrow books on the spot, encouraging them to become lifelong readers. Spread across the York College front plaza, the fair was a colorful and lively scene. Families collected free goods and services ranging from crayons and haircuts to basic dental care. A representative from Queensborough Community College was on hand to share information about CUNY Start, and local businesses -- including AT&T -- also took part in the August 11 fair.
“Community partnership and service are at the heart of the work we do at York College,” said Dr. Rachael Walton of York’s Office of Student Activities, who organized the event. “We are grateful to collaborate with the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) and community-based organizations. This event reminds us that education is not the work of schools alone but of the entire community.”
ACS echoed that sentiment: “ACS works closely with our community partners to ensure children and families have the support they need to thrive, and we are so grateful to York College for hosting and participating in our Back-to-School Fair in Queens this year. We encourage any families in need of services and support to call our dedicated Support Line (212-676-7667) or visit www.nyc.gov/ForFamilies. Have a wonderful and safe school year!” said ACS Commissioner Jess Dannhauser.

While the entire event was an unqualified success, the highlight for many was the arrival of Mr. Met, the New York Mets’ beloved mascot, who delighted the children and charmed adults as well. York’s Cardinal mascot also joined in the fun, sharing a joyful embrace with Mr. Met and added to the festive atmosphere.
To cap off the day, families lined up at the ice cream truck for free treats, while children from elementary through middle school showed off their moves in a lively dance-off. Music throughout the event was provided by York’s own radio station, YCradio.org, hosted by Bryan Graves, broadcast associate/lead operator.
