Aviation Alum Enjoying Success as JFK Redevelopment Project Manager
Edferson Jonathan Gernier, a York College Aviation Management graduate, is living his best life working in his chosen field while honoring his alma mater. “I am a proud alumnus of York College, CUNY. I graduated in Spring 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management,” he said. “My degree has allowed me to take part in the JFK Redevelopment Project as a project management assistant with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Aviation Department.”

As a student in the CUNY Aviation Institute at York College, Gernier received the teaching and mentorship that prepared him for professional success. He now expresses gratitude for those who made a lasting impact on his academic and career journeys.
“I’d like to highlight two individuals who greatly contributed to my college experience and professional growth after graduation,” Gernier said. “First, Dr. Billy Metallinos, a caring instructor and a true aviation savant. His teaching not only deepened my passion for aviation but also equipped me with the practical skills needed to excel in the industry. Every one of [Professor Metallinos’] students can attest to how he connects classroom learning to real-world aviation careers. With a wealth of stories and [years] of firsthand experience, Professor Metallinos stands as a cornerstone of York College’s Aviation Program and continues to be a professional mentor to me.”
Gernier continued, “The second is Ms. Denecia Marshall, York College’s Industry Employment Specialist. Ms. Marshall is wholeheartedly dedicated to helping students achieve their professional goals. She was the one who provided me with my first opportunity in the field, an internship with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which became the foundation for the aviation experiences I’ve gained since. Her unwavering commitment to student success continues to transform the lives of countless York College students every day.”
Gernier added, “Both of these figures have had an immense impact on my academic and professional journey. I encourage all students, especially those pursuing Aviation Management, to seek guidance and support from these exceptional faculty and staff members.”
For his part, Dr. Metallinos couldn’t be more pleased with his former student’s success.
“I remember Edferson Gernier as a student destined for great things, and I am so proud to see his journey unfold,” said Metallinos. “In my air traffic control class at York College, he was a standout talent, demonstrating a deep understanding of the material that earned him an A. Even more impressive was his unwavering dedication, which led him to graduate with a GPA above 3.0. He has since become an integral part of the aviation industry with his position in program management at the Port Authority of NY/NJ, where his drive for excellence no doubt continues to benefit all.”
But professional success isn’t the only thing that impresses his former mentor. “Beyond his career achievements, it’s his generous spirit and commitment to giving back to the community through philanthropic endeavors that truly make him shine,” Metallinos reflected. “I knew from the moment I met him that he would push himself to do great things -- and I know he will continue to do the same.”
