A Day of Gratitude: York College Celebrates Federal Work-Study Students

By Cheryl Morrison,

On a bright, joy-filled afternoon at York College, something extraordinary happened -- and I had the distinct honor of planning and organizing it. The Federal Work Study (FWS) Appreciation Day wasn't just another event; it was a heartfelt tribute to the hard work, dedication, and spirit of our student employees who quietly keep our campus moving forward.

This celebration was only possible because of a community that believes in the value of our students. I am deeply thankful to the President's Office for its support, especially to Nyisha Howell, whose efforts to secure funding made this day possible. Our gratitude also extends to Dr. Claudia Schrader, President of York College; Dr. Karen Williams, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management; and Nicholas Jones, Executive Director of Enrollment Management. Their leadership and encouragement breathe life into student-centered initiatives like this.

Thanks must also go to the Office of Student Activities, the SEEK Program, the CUNY Explorer Program, YC Radio and the Financial Aid Office. Their collaboration made the event seamless, meaningful, and memorable.

As York's FWS Coordinator, and proudly, a former FWS student, I know firsthand how much this program means. It's about more than just a paycheck. It's about growth. It's about building a network. It's about learning what professionalism feels like and realizing that your contributions matter.

That's why yesterday's celebration wasn't just symbolic but necessary. Each student received a certificate of appreciation and a sweet treat to match: ice cream. Simple tokens, yes, but powerful reminders that we see them. We value them.

Our student workers show up every day with energy, reliability, and a desire to learn. They juggle academics, jobs, and life with admirable determination. I want every FWS student to walk away from this day feeling the support and care that defines York College. That's what we're here for—not just to educate, but to uplift.

Thursday's FWS Appreciation Day was a visible expression of what we believe in: students first. Always.
