Chris Monasch to lead York Cardinals as Interim Director of Athletics

York College has announced the appointment of Chris Monasch as the Interim Director of Athletics, effective August 28th.

Monasch arrives at York with over three decades in leadership roles across NCAA Divisions I, II and III, he served as Director of Athletics at St. John's University from 2005-15.  

“We are excited to welcome Chris to the York College family,” said President Berenecea Johnson Eanes. “His extensive experience and leadership will benefit the College and help us continue to develop and grow our athletic program.”

Providing leadership to his alma mater's athletics program at St. John's, the Red Storm qualified for 26 NCAA Tournament appearances, won eight Big East Championships, and seven Big East Regular-Season titles under Monasch's guidance. His student-athletes also excelled in the classroom with a collective grade point average higher than the general student population, and dedicating more than 2,000 hours annually to service within the community.

Following his tenure at St. John’s, Monasch has been involved in consulting, serving two stints as Interim Director of Athletics at East Stroudsburg University (2015-16) and SUNY Maritime College (2016).

Prior to St. John’s, Monasch was the commissioner of two division I conferences – the Northeast Conference (1987-97) and the America East Conference (1997-2005).  Monasch started his career at Fordham University as Assistant Athletics Director (1981-85) and Interim Director of Athletics (1985) before moving on to Seton Hall University in 1985 for a two-year stint as Associate Athletics Director.

Monasch has also served on numerous NCAA committees throughout his career and has taught classes in Athletic Administration at St. John’s University and Sports Law at the Seton Hall University School of Law.

He graduated from St. John’s University in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management. Monasch also has a master's degree in Public Communications from Fordham University and a Juris Doctorate from the Seton Hall University School of Law. He is a member of the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Bars. 

Carl Christian will continue to serve as the CUNYAC Interim Executive Director, with the retirement of Zak Ivkovic, who led York as the Interim Director of Athletics since September 2022.
