Student’s internship turns into promising career with the company

York College senior Henry Dugue, is in a good place as he prepares to graduate in spring 2023 as a Computer Science major.

Following a two-month summer internship over the summer 2022, Dugue has been hired by the company that gave him the internship.

“I interned at Turner Surety Insurance and Brokerage, for a paid, remote internship” said Dugue. “I work in the area called Diversity Assured. It is a new division just created. They sent out requirements for minority and women-owned business enterprise (MWBE) they need 60 percent of MWBEs. They help companies find these diverse companies. I use Python code and Visual Studio Code to compile data into one to make it easier.”

The intern obviously made a good impression on his supervisors and others because when the opportunity was about to end, the company offered Dugue to stay on as a full employee still continuing his remote schedule.

“I like working for this company,” said Dugue. I was able to hit the ground running, learning more as I go along. They have been very encouraging. They provided me with a laptop and it’s been a very good experience.”

Dugue revealed that he found the job through CUNY Simplicity and he thanks York’s Career Services “for being there” as well. The first-generation Haitian-American go-getter once worked for New York’s Taxi and Limousine Services (TLC), but realized he would soon be graduating and needed experience more relevant to his major. He took the initiative and found the Turner Surety job and is reveling in it.

He encourages other students to follow his lead and seek out internship opportunities to make themselves career-ready or to shore up their graduate school viability with hands-on experience in the filed to which they are applying.
