Curator Statement

The Untethered series is driven by issues teenage girls face. Curry documents girls’ stories as they confront their identity, beauty standards, and society/peer pressures to conform. In her research process, Ms. Curry creates safe spaces for young women and girls to express stories of their inner lives and experiences. Using anonymous surveys and interviews, Curry collaborates with young women to tell their stories in paintings that are sensitive, moving, and beautiful.  She discovered that “this forces us to witness this secret world and perhaps empathize with these young women as we catch a glimpse of our self in their image.”

This body of work explores how teen girls interact with each other, society, and themselves to offer a glimpse of their inner battles with self-image and peer relationships. Curry explores the complex, and seemingly impossible, journey of young girls as they struggle with the difficult transition from childhood to adulthood. The concerns of Generation Z teens, often perceived as self-absorbed or shallow, tend to fall on deaf ears.
