David Antonio Cruz - September 13 - October 12, 2018

David Antonio Cruz is a multidisciplinary, New York-based artist. Cruz fuses painting, video, and performance to explore the invisibility and silencing of brown and black queer bodies throughout history and within our communities. He explores the timeless and timely intersections of queer identity, the male-to-male gaze, and navigation of space as a gender-fluid person of color.

The York College Fine Arts Gallery is proud to present this exhibition which features a broad selection of work that speak to the breadth and multimedia depth of Cruz’s oeuvre to date. David Cruz was a popular adjunct professor of painting and drawing for the Performing and Fine Arts Department from the Spring 2014 through the Summer of 2018 when he accepted a full-time teaching position at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. The rigor of his teaching style and Cruz’s openness with his guidance and sharing of what a professional artist’s life can be about will be sorely missed by both students and colleagues here at York.
