Adjunct health insurance through the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund has been extended through April 30

On January 17 Barbara Bowen, Chairperson of the Welfare Fund Board of Trustees and President of the PSC, sent the following letter to adjuncts on the health insurance plan.

Dear Colleague,

Adjunct health insurance through the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund has been extended through April 30. We are moving closer to an agreement on achieving permanent health insurance coverage for eligible adjuncts, but the final stage is taking longer than expected. In order to give you some stability about your care and to allow for a humane transition to a new system, the Welfare Fund Trustees voted for the three-month extension. Coverage for eligible adjuncts under the terms currently in place will continue through April 30, 2013, and will be provided through the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund.

I hope that this longer extension will allow you to plan for the next few months of your care without the stress of month-to-month extensions. The union leadership aims to have new coverage for eligible adjuncts in place by May 1, 2013, and we have been working with University management to gain final approvals. Our shared goal is to give you ample time to make the transition to a new plan.

Thank you for your patience during this long negotiation. I can only begin to imagine how difficult these months have been for you. The PSC leadership is grateful to the Welfare Fund Trustees for voting to continue coverage and to the University for agreeing to support the financial terms of the coverage.

I will update you as negotiations progress.

In solidarity, Barbara Bowen President, PSC/CUNY
