York Professor Appointed Poet Laureate of Hempstead

Teacher Education professor and poet Dr. Lindamichelle Baron has been declared Inaugural Poet Laureate of the Town of Hempstead, Long Island.

Dr. Baron, an author of books, book chapters, articles and a presenter in her education field, has expertise in Literacy, Critical Literacy, Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Poetry as Pedagogy, Social and Emotional Intelligence; and Sexual Health of Black Adolescent Girls. A former chair of the Teacher Education department and still fully engaged with her teaching, Professor Baron also serves as chair of the board of the Africana Studies Center (ASC) at York College.

"We are delighted that Lindamichelle has received such [a] significant recognition," said Dr. George White, interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and a board member of the ASC under Dr. Baron's leadership. "Her poetry can be whimsical and witty or profound and perfervid but always entertaining and edifying.  We are so very proud that she is one of ours!"

Known artistically as Lindamichellebaron, her gifts have been widely celebrated, including by the York College Theater Program, which honored her in the 2015-2016 season with "Live, Laugh, Love, Cry! The Poetry of Lindamichellebaron," conceived by Lelia Billings and directed by Professor Thomas Marion. Presented with original music by Dr. Jonathan Quash and choreography by York Alumni Miya Bass and Vania St. Louis, "the show engages us with a montage of inspirational reflections on love, dignity, self-worth, perseverance, and spiritual harmony."
