Dear Students,

My schedule is typically packed to the brim with meetings and events. That’s why last week I was so excited to have the opportunity and time in my schedule to make it down to our track and field to see our women’s soccer team play John Jay College.

The John Jay team had more players on the field, but our team had more heart.  They hustled, worked together and clearly they had a love for the game.  But as I watched them, I thought that this is more than just love.  This is commitment.

I never played sports in college, but I couldn’t imagine how I would balance anything else in addition to my classes— even though classes were the only thing that I had on my plate.

However,  many of you have so much more on your plate: like working full or part time jobs, taking care of your family,  having a social life, and then there is your college life of student clubs, internships and other activities. And if you are an athlete, you would have to add practicing, training in the gym, and playing in away and home games to your plate.

I sat there watching the game and our team play, I was filled with respect and admiration for our student-athletes and for all of you because of what you balance in pursuit of your goals.   You are the real MVP.

My message today is simple: stay focused and stay committed.  I can’t wait to see you in the winner’s circle on Commencement Day!

President Schrader
