May/June Alumni Announcement
You won't be surprised to hear this because I am sure you know that York College has many, many alumni who have distinguished themselves. We are just beginning to learn who you are and where you are. I encourage each of you to re-connect with us and re-engage in our journey.
I would like to introduce to you an alumnus that some of you may know. Read how he has made himself accountable, so to speak.
Coming to York College from his native Grenada, Robert Clovey '89 majored in Accounting. After getting his bachelor's degree, he passed the CPA exams and began working in the field. He then received his MS in Accounting from Queens College. In 1997, Clovey went back to the classroom, becoming a high school Mathematics teacher in Westbury, Long Island, and an adjunct professor at Iona College. "I've always wanted to teach, especially on the college level," he says.
Returning to his alma mater, the assistant professor of Accounting brought along a practice he had learned here: free tax preparation for the surrounding community. This tax season, Clovey's students completed returns for more than 500 senior citizens and other low-income individuals. Collectively, these clients received over $500,000 in refunds, and saved almost $100,000 in filing fees.
