Dr. Gandarilla-Javier is a native New Yorker who was born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in East Harlem by her mother and grandparents. Prior to coming to York College, Dr. Gandarilla-Javier worked at Morgan State University as an Assistant Professor of Social Work at the BSW Program where she taught Intro to Social Work, Human Behavior and Social Environment I & II, Social Work Practice I, and Substance Ab(use) and Chemical Dependency. Prior to becoming a NYS licensed social worker, Dr. Gandarilla-Javier was a NYC Police Officer who worked in the domestic violence unit and police academy. As a social worker, Dr. Gandarilla-Javier has worked in various clinical and forensic settings . Her research focuses on IPV, immigration among Latinx, trauma-informed care, restorative justice, and feminist practice. Dr. Gandarilla-Javier preferred research methodology is qualitative with a focus on phenomenological, ethnography, and participatory action research.
