Professor Spergel joined York College as a Charter faculty member in 1967. He became coordinator of the Physics program and between 1985- 2004 served as the Chairperson of the largest department at York College, the Department of Natural Sciences. While Chair he was instrumental in bring the FDA Food Testing Laboratory to the York College Campus.
Dr. Spergel has been involved with investigating cosmic ray particle-particle and particle-nuclear interactions particularly in meteorites, asteroids and on planetary surfaces. Dr. Spergel has published extensively and has held NASA grants in these areas. He is recognized in the international community of scientists interested in cosmic ray interactions.Professor Spergel has published 38 refereed journal articles, 17 published reports through Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Grumman Research Department. He has made over 20 Professional presentations at National Meetings and Symposia
